I work to improve soil maps and build on the foundation built by previous soil scientists. Knowledge from the past is valuable because as humans have altered the land we have lost some of the original landscape, to a certain extent. I believe we can use the previous knowledge to assess sustainability of our current land-uses and assess how they have altered the landscape.

I believe accurate soil mapping is essential to the future prosperity of the world. Proper communication of soil issues to the public is critical. Soil maps facilitate this communication because they illustrate spatial and temporal variability in the soil. For example, they improve nutrient management by cutting back on unnecessary fertilizer use in the agricultural industry.  Better understanding of these changes will drive innovation in a multitude of professions and will lead to a better future for the world.
